Why train with us?

The Salop Teaching School Alliance is a Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin based partnership of successful and outstanding secondary schools working in collaboration with both local authorities.

Our vision is to deliver an outstanding school-centred PGCE programme, based in local schools.  Trainees and graduates studying with us will be exposed to the highest quality teaching and learning strategies delivered by leading practitioners building on the latest educational research and national developments.

Our unique combination of secondary schools and sixth form colleges across both local authorities will ensure any trainee will experience teaching in a variety of contexts and key stages.  Thus making them more appealing to future employers.

We are delighted to announce our Initial Teacher Training provider will be the University of Chester. Working in partnership with the University will mean we are able to provide local high quality teacher training, delivered by outstanding practitioners and with placements in successful and outstanding local schools across Shropshire & Telford and Wrekin

About the programme

Trainees will complete a total of 180 days of training.  120 days will be in the classroom observing and building up to whole class teaching as soon as possible.  The aim of School Direct, as opposed to the conventional PGCE, is that trainees are more quickly immersed in the practicalities of teaching; results in a more confident and competent teacher.

There will be 50 days of professional studies, based around wider educational issues such as Behaviour Management, SEND and Assessment.  These will be delivered one day per week on a rotation basis by highly experienced teachers from schools in our partnership.  This ensures you are developing an understanding clearly based on classroom practice and how educational theory sits within this.  In addition, there will be 10 days of subject based work in your chosen secondary subject.  Some of this will be delivered locally but there will be a number of days where trainees will have to attend Chester University sessions.
